the insider's guide to your city
DailyCandy is a handpicked selection of all that's fun, fashionable, food related, and culturally stimulating in the city you’re fixated on (and all over the Web).
The flap over the $32,000 bottle of cognac. The Twitter-based burger price war. Del Frisco’s stripper pole.
In this town, foodie news gets old faster than fresh cream.
So plop a dollop on one of Stephanie Thaw’s just-baked pies. At her new Sweetie’s Pie Diner, the under-repped pastries get their fifteen minutes of fame.
Opening tomorrow, the cheery, retro-themed kitchenette serves 35 sweet and savory pies. Thaw uses cream cheese, minimal flour, and butter to create flaky, melt-in-your-mouth crusts, then fills ’em up with local and organic ingredients — like honey, lavender, and pine nuts or heirloom tomato.
Thaw’s breakfast bread pudding, made with dried fruit and aged Italian baguette drizzled with blood orange syrup, is not to be missed. If you prefer your sweets with homemade caramel on top, not to worry.
She’s got the scoop.
